Finishing Touches
those little things that mean everything
The finishing of a home is not only what makes it beautiful, but in conventional new home construction is usually the greatest health risk due to off-gassing of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).
Green Homes significantly reduces the VOC’s present in new home construction by recognizing and aiding in the selection of finishing products. Suggesting only those which promote healthy air quality, are man-made or made from sustainable, renewable, natural products and those created from recycled materials.
Standard in a Green Home home includes:
- No and Low VOC paints and finishes available in the market. Including wall paint, cabinet stains and top coats, as well as hardwood finishing coats (oil based lacquers are never used);
- Formaldehyde-free composite wood products;
- Many post-consumer, recycled or reclaimed finishing products available;
- Locally manufactured, sustainable hardwood flooring;
- Extremely low VOC carpeting; containing ingredients made from corn sugar (37% of the carpet fiber comes from renewable sourced ingredients that replace petroleum);
- Porcelain, man-made or stone tile;
- Natural stone, quartz, paper, wood or low-VOC laminate countertops.
